Scientists have restored the real face of Jesus
If you look for images of Jesus on the Internet, we will see a tall white man with long blond hair and a beard. But what did he really look like?
But according to scientists, the real Jesus has nothing to do with these modern images. Professor of Royal College London, Joan Taylor, writes in his book, “What did Jesus look like?”: “The biblical Gospels say that Jesus was a Jew born about 4 years AD. e. in Bethlehem and not long lived in Egypt, and then in Nazareth. These texts do not say anything about his appearance, except for a couple of mentions of clothing worn by Jesus and his disciples. ” In an interview with LiveScience, she adds: “It’s just amazing how little we know about it.”
To understand how the real Jesus could look, Taylor turned to archaeological finds and texts that shed light on the appearance of Jews in Judea and Egypt of that period. She also studied images on coins and Egyptian mummies. Her research shows that Jesus was about 1.7 meters tall, a typical growth for men in Judea according to skeleton remains. Most of the people in Judea and Egypt were dark-eyed, with dark hair and olive skin, just as they are depicted in historical texts and portraits in Egypt.
There were trade and political interactions between Judea and Europe, as well as Judea and Ethiopia. But Jews in Judea and Egypt preferred to marry within their community, so, most likely, Jesus looked like most people in the region at this time. Existing texts also say that Jews preferred to short hair and beard to cut lice. Most likely, Jesus did the same.
In the Gospels Jesus is portrayed as a carpenter who traveled a lot, but did not eat too much. Therefore, he most likely was thin and sinewy: “Jesus was physically fit with his work experience. Therefore, you should not portray him as a person who leads an easy life, as often happens, “Taylor says.
